Bunker fuel in Singapore at a glance

The main bunker fuels bought in Singapore are VLSFO (0.50% sulphur), HSFO (up to 3.50% sulphur, for scrubber-fitted ships), marine gas oil and low sulphur marine gas oil (0.10% sulphur), and marine diesel oil. FAME biofuel blends, LNG and methanol are also supplied by licensed suppliers with the necessary capability.

Two separate ideas describe a marine fuel, and they are often confused. Viscosity grade describes how thick the fuel is, for example the 380 in HSFO 380, which refers to a maximum kinematic viscosity of 380 mm²/s (cSt) at 50°C under ISO 8217 grade RMG 380. Sulphur classification describes how much sulphur the fuel contains, which decides where and how a vessel may burn it under MARPOL Annex VI. A VLSFO can be an RMG 380 or an RMD 80 by viscosity grade and still be a 0.50% sulphur fuel. An HSFO 380 and a VLSFO 380 share a viscosity grade but sit in different sulphur categories.

Availability

How marine fuel availability is confirmed

We do not show fuels as permanently “in stock”. Availability in Singapore depends on the grade, the quantity, the delivery date and location, and on which licensed suppliers have barge capacity at that time. Conventional grades are usually obtainable from several suppliers. Biofuel blends at particular ratios, LNG and methanol are supplied by a smaller number of licensed suppliers and need more lead time.

When you enquire, we confirm the grade, the specification edition (ISO 8217:2017 or ISO 8217:2024) and the quantity a supplier can actually deliver, and we put that in the written offer.

Choosing the right grade

  • Check the engine maker’s fuel recommendations and the vessel’s fuel treatment capability (heating, purifiers, viscosity control).
  • Check the sulphur regime for every part of the voyage ahead, including ECAs and any port-specific rules.
  • Check the charter party bunker clause for the required ISO 8217 edition and any owner specifications.
  • Avoid commingling incompatible fuels on board. Segregate new deliveries where possible until compatibility is known.

Marine fuel FAQs

What is the difference between VLSFO and HSFO?

VLSFO contains no more than 0.50% sulphur and can be burned by any vessel under the MARPOL Annex VI global limit. HSFO contains up to 3.50% sulphur and may only be used by vessels with an approved exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber). Both are residual fuels and both are commonly supplied at the 380 cSt viscosity grade.

Does 380 mean the sulphur content?

No. 380 refers to the maximum kinematic viscosity, 380 cSt (mm²/s) at 50°C. Sulphur content is a separate property. A 380 cSt fuel can be a VLSFO or an HSFO.

Which fuels are always available in Singapore?

No grade is guaranteed on every date. VLSFO, HSFO 380 and MGO are traded daily and are normally obtainable from several licensed suppliers, but availability for a particular date, location and quantity is confirmed for each enquiry.

Can I order fuel to ISO 8217:2024?

Yes, where the supplier can deliver to that edition. State the edition in your enquiry. Many charter parties still refer to ISO 8217:2017, so the right edition depends on your contract.
