Distillate · 0.10% sulphur
0.10% sulphur distillate fuel for emission control areas and other 0.10% requirements on the voyage ahead, sourced from MPA-licensed suppliers.
Low sulphur marine gas oil (LSMGO) is a distillate marine fuel, normally ISO 8217 grade DMA or DMZ, with a sulphur content of no more than 0.10% m/m. It is bought mainly so that vessels can comply with the 0.10% sulphur limit inside emission control areas (ECAs) and with similar requirements at certain ports.
For a vessel loading in Singapore, the question is usually not the Singapore leg but the next one. A ship bound for North America, the US Caribbean, the North Sea, the Baltic or the Mediterranean will need enough 0.10% fuel on board, unless it uses an approved scrubber or an alternative fuel, before it enters the ECA. European Union rules also require 0.10% sulphur fuel for ships at berth in EU ports.
Because LSMGO is a distillate, it shares the handling characteristics of MGO: low viscosity, no heating requirement, and attention needed to minimum viscosity, lubricity and cold flow properties.
Specifications
LSMGO is specified as an ISO 8217 distillate grade with the statutory sulphur limit set at 0.10% m/m. A typical enquiry reads “LSMGO DMA, sulphur max 0.10%, ISO 8217:2017”.
| Parameter | LSMGO (DMA basis, ISO 8217:2017) |
|---|---|
| Sulphur | max 0.10% m/m |
| Kinematic viscosity at 40°C | 2.000–6.000 mm²/s |
| Density at 15°C | max 890.0 kg/m³ |
| Cetane index | min 40 |
| Flash point | min 60.0°C |
| Lubricity (wear scar) | max 520 µm |
If the vessel’s engines need a higher minimum viscosity, specify DMZ. If FAME-free product is required, state that too, because ISO 8217:2024 bio-distillate grades can contain FAME.
Vessel applications
Ships heading for a 0.10% emission control area that need sufficient compliant fuel before entry.
Vessels that must burn 0.10% fuel at berth in EU ports.
Owners who standardise on 0.10% gas oil for generators and boilers.
Reserve compliant fuel in case a scrubber cannot be operated.
Operational considerations
Fuel changeover before entering an ECA must be complete, with the 0.10% fuel actually reaching the engines, before the ship crosses the boundary. Calculate the changeover time from the vessel’s piping, settling and service tank volumes, and order enough LSMGO for the full ECA transit plus a margin.
MARPOL Annex VI requires the changeover to be recorded, including the date, time, position and the volume of compliant fuel in each tank. Keep the bunker delivery note and sample records aligned with these entries.
Watch minimum viscosity at the fuel pumps, lubricity and cold flow properties on cold-water routes. Avoid contaminating LSMGO tanks with higher-sulphur product, which could take the fuel off-specification for sulphur.
Procurement & delivery
LSMGO is delivered by licensed bunker tankers with metered quantity and an e-BDN. We line up the delivery window with your residual stem so both grades arrive in the same operation where the supplier can do it.
Sulphur is the critical parameter. Retain the MARPOL sample, and consider independent testing of sulphur and flash point before using the fuel in the ECA. We can arrange laboratory testing.
Use the bunker quotation form and choose LSMGO 0.10% S. Compare with standard marine gas oil.
Because the next leg may enter one. Vessels sailing to North America, the US Caribbean, Northern Europe or the Mediterranean need 0.10% sulphur fuel on board before entering those ECAs, unless they use a scrubber or alternative fuel.
No. ULSFO is a residual-type fuel with 0.10% sulphur, while LSMGO is a distillate. Both can meet the 0.10% limit but they handle differently. Tell us which the vessel is set up to burn.
Enough for the full ECA transit and port stays, plus the changeover volume and a safety margin. Base the figure on the voyage plan and the vessel’s consumption.
